I Dress Women for a Living. Nobody Says “apron belly” Out Loud, and Hiding It Is Most of My Job.

I Dress Women for a Living. Nobody Says “apron belly” Out Loud, and Hiding It Is Most of My Job.

Every October the same request arrives, worded about forty different ways. I have spent fifteen years solving it with fabric. Here is what I say now, and why I stopped reaching for the wrap dress first.

The fold that sits over the waistband

They do not ask to look thinner. Almost nobody says that.

What they say is, “I need something for my sister’s wedding.” Or the work thing in December. Or, most often in the last weeks of the year, “I am seeing everyone at Christmas and I have not seen them since last Christmas.”

And then, somewhere in the next minute, a hand goes flat across the middle of the stomach. Every time. They almost never say the words.

In fifteen years I have had maybe four women say “apron belly” to my face. They know the phrase. Most of them found it at two in the morning on their phone and felt a small, strange relief that there was a name for it. They will just not say it out loud standing in someone else’s fitting room. That gesture is the actual brief. The dress is only what they came in to buy.

What the weight left behind

What I Am Actually Paid To Do About It

I am good at this part, so let me tell you exactly how it is done. None of it is a secret and none of it is a trick.

  • Ruching across the middle. The eye follows the folds instead of the shape underneath them. It is the most reliable thing in my kit.
  • A waistline that sits above it rather than across it. A seam landing on the fold is what makes a dress look wrong, and almost nobody can tell you why.
  • Structured fabric that holds its own shape so it does not take yours. Cheap jersey takes yours.
  • A darker panel down the centre front. Old trick, still works, and every high street brand uses it whether they admit it or not.
  • A wrap that crosses at the narrowest point and lets everything below it drape rather than cling.

But I want to be honest about what all of that is

Every technique I just listed is a way of hiding something. Not one of them changes anything. A dress hides it while you have it on. The thing I am going to describe changes it whether you are wearing it or not.

Twenty minutes, on the sofa, while the television is on

It took me an embarrassingly long time to see that difference, because I was busy being good at the first one.

What I could not do, for fifteen years, was offer anybody a second option. There was the dress, and then there was nothing.

The fourth cover-up of the year

The Fitting That Made Me Stop

A client came in last autumn for her fourth cover-up of the year. A wrap dress in March for a christening. A longer top in June. A shapewear set in August. And now something for a December party. She was standing on the little platform looking at the mirror and she said, not really to me, “I keep buying the same thing in different colours.”

I added it up later, which I probably should not have done

She had spent more on hiding it that year than the thing I am about to describe costs once. And she was going to need a fifth in the spring, because that is how hiding works. It is re-bought every season, forever, and it never gets any closer to finished.

The question I had never once asked a client

What I Found Out, And I Want To Be Clear This Is Not My Field

I am a stylist. I am not medical, I have no clinical training whatsoever, and I am not going to pretend otherwise for the sake of a more impressive article. So I asked people who are, and I read considerably more than I expected to.

Where the surface stops and the layer underneath begins

The part that is straightforward enough for me to repeat accurately

The change women ask me for does not happen at the surface. It happens roughly an inch and a half down, in the layer where collagen and elastin sit. That one fact explained something I had watched for fifteen years without understanding.

Creams cannot get there. That is not a scam and it is not the cream’s fault, it is depth. Topicals work at the surface, which is a real job and a useful one. It is simply not this job.

The layer this actually happens in

And shapewear, wraps, anything that compresses, is doing something temporary to shape. Not to structure. Which is the same sentence as everything in my own kit, said more precisely.

Everything I sell works above the layer she is asking about

Once somebody says that to you plainly it is quite difficult to un-hear. I had built a career on the surface without ever asking what was underneath it.

Eight weeks apart, same person, same light

I look at pictures like that one the way I look at a lookbook, which is to say sceptically and with an eye on the lighting. The only version that matters is your own waistband at week eight.

Twenty minutes, and then you take it off
From the stylist
I will still make you something that hides it, and I will do it well. I am only pointing out that one of the two options stops working the moment you take it off, and for fifteen years it was the only one I had to offer.

The Part About Time, Which Is Why I Am Writing This In October

That layer rebuilds slowly. What I was told, repeatedly and by more than one person, is six to eight weeks before it is fair to judge anything at all. Now count from here. Start in the first week of October and week eight is the middle of December.

Week one and week eight, same waistband

It is the same number. The deadline everybody is dressing for and the length of time this takes are the same length, which is the only reason I am writing this in autumn rather than in May when everyone actually thinks about it. Start it the week before the party and it will not have done anything, and you will conclude it does not work. It is not that it does not work. It is that you started it eight weeks late.

Why The Cheap Ones Fail, Which Is Not The Reason People Assume

Three clients have shown me a red light belt they bought and gave up on. One brought it to a fitting in her handbag, which tells you how much she wanted to be told it was not her fault. All three failed inside a month. One had a control unit that had already died.

The controller, which is the part that usually dies

Set a month against six to eight weeks and the arithmetic does itself. Those were never going to work. They stopped before the clock they were being judged against had started running.

How it sits when it is fastened

One was too short for her to fasten without holding it, which as a person who fits garments for a living I can tell you is the end of any routine, immediately and permanently. If you have to hold something in place for twenty minutes, you will do it four times and then stop.

The build, laid flat
  • The split, not the wavelengths. Every belt prints 660nm and 850nm, so that settles nothing. Ask how many of each. The one my clients got somewhere with runs two red chips to every one infrared, 315 chips, 210 and 105, and prints it.
  • The warranty, because it is a prediction. A warranty is a company’s own estimate of when its product will fail. Thirty days is not stinginess, it is arithmetic. I would want a year.
  • The length, which nobody mentions and I always do. 50.8 inches fastens on most people. Measure yourself first, the way you would before buying anything else that has to close.
  • The session length. Twenty minutes. Treat anything longer as a reason to be suspicious, because an hour-long routine is one you abandon in week two.
What arrives

Who I Would Actually Say This Is For

Not everybody, and I would rather say so. Three groups come into my fitting room with this and they are quite distinct from one another.

Women whose shape changed after a baby, however long ago

It is almost never the recent ones. It is the woman whose youngest is eleven and who has quietly assumed this is simply what she looks like now.

Women who lost a lot of weight and did not get the shape back

This is the group who are most annoyed, and fairly so. They did the hard part. The clothes still do not sit the way the number on the scale suggests they should.

Women in and after menopause

The most common thing I hear is that nothing about their wardrobe changed but everything about how it fits did. That is the group the timing argument matters most for, because they have usually been putting it off the longest.

And the people I would tell not to bother: anybody with a party in three weeks who wants it for the party. I would rather say that than sell you a disappointment.

What Actually Changes, And It Is Not A Measurement

Nobody has ever come back and told me a number. Not once in fifteen years, and I have asked.

What they tell me is that they stopped sending me the photograph of the outfit before leaving the house. That they wore the fitted thing instead of the safe thing. One told me her sister asked what she had changed and guessed it was her hair.

That is the outcome. It is a behaviour, not a body.

And I notice it in a fitting before anybody says a word, because they stop putting a hand across the middle. They do not know they have stopped. I do, because I have watched several hundred women do it.

What I tell clients now
If you are going to try it, start it in October. Not because anybody is running an offer, but because six to eight weeks from October is December, and that is the only piece of timing in this that actually matters.

The Thing They All Say To Me, And Why It Is Wrong

Some version of the same sentence, every time: that they never stick at anything.

They stuck at it for a month. The belt did not last a month.

It was not her consistency that failed, it was the hardware, and she has been quietly carrying the blame for it ever since. That is the part that annoys me most, and it is the reason I agreed to write this at all.

Twenty minutes, on the sofa, with the television on. You do not have to be disciplined. It is short enough that being undisciplined does not matter.

These are the notes I get in January, and they are all the same shape. Nobody reports a measurement. They report something they did that they would not have done the year before.

I wore the dress with the seam across the front. I have avoided that seam for about nine years and I could not have told you that until I put it on and it did not bother me.

The thing that got me is that I stopped doing the check in the hallway mirror on the way out. I did not decide to stop. I noticed in January that I had.

Two of these died on me before. My husband asked why I was bothering again. This one is still working, which is more than either of the others managed.

None of them mention a number. I have started to find that quite persuasive, because a number is the first thing anybody makes up.

What I Would Say About The Money, As The Person Who Sees The Receipts

  • It is $139.95, once. The client I described spent more than that on four cover-ups in a single year, and would have spent it again in the spring. Hiding is not the cheap option. It is a subscription you did not realise you had signed up to.
  • The cheap belts are not cheap either.Three at forty dollars is more than one that lasts, and the three produced nothing, which makes their cost per useful week impossible to calculate because you cannot divide by zero.
  • Sixty nights to decide.Longer than any of the three belts my clients brought me actually survived, which I think is the most useful way to hear that number.
  • It fits a real evening.Twenty minutes with the television on. If a routine needs an hour it is not a routine, it is a second job, and you will drop it before week two.

The Questions I Get In The Fitting Room

Is this not just a heated wrap?
No, and it is the distinction I had to have explained to me. Heat stops at the skin. That is not opinion, it is just where heat goes. 660nm and 850nm are studied for the layer underneath it. Different job entirely, and if you have used a heated belt you already know the two do not feel alike.
I have a party in three weeks. Is it worth starting?
Not for the party. Start it for the spring, or start it now and judge it in December, but do not buy it on Tuesday and expect anything on Saturday. I would rather tell you that than take the sale.
Can I still wear shapewear?
Of course, and I will still fit you for it. They do different jobs and there is no reason to pick. I am only pointing out that one of them stops working the moment you take it off.
Does it help with stretch marks?
Some clients mention them and some do not. I would buy it for how clothes sit rather than for marks specifically, and I would rather set that expectation now than have you disappointed at week eight.
How long each night, honestly?
Twenty minutes. I would treat anything longer as a reason to be suspicious, because a routine that takes an hour is a routine you will abandon, and week two is nowhere near far enough in to judge it.

I Will Still Make You Something That Hides It

And I will do it well, because that is my trade and I am not embarrassed about it. Ruching, structure, a seam in the right place. It works, it works immediately, and there is nothing wrong with wanting it.

I would just rather you had the choice. For fifteen years the only thing I could offer was a better way to cover it, and I did not know there was a second option to mention. Now I do, so I mention it.

If you are going to try it, start it in October. Not because anybody is running an offer, but because six to eight weeks from October is December, and that is the only piece of timing in this that actually matters.
